Resumen:
The role of gravity waves (GW) in forcing the global-scale circulation and the thermal structure of the lower and middle atmosphere has long been recognizedMore than a decade of global satellite observations in the tropo/stratosphere (e.g. AIRS, CRISTA, COSMIC, CHAMP, SABER) has shown that the leeward of the southern Andes mountains region exhibits, during winter and spring, among the largest GW amplitudes, energy densities, and momentum fluxes of any region on EarthThe Rayleigh lidar is a powerfull complementary tool to study GW activity in the stratosphere/lower mesosphere (USLM) with high temporal and vertical resolution (typically 1hr and 1km)
