Resumen:
Transgender people provide a unique opportunity toexamine the effect of biological sex versus gender identityon mating preferences. This study aimed at identifying themate characteristics that are most and least valued bytransgender people and at examining to what extent theirbiological sex or their gender identity determined theirmate preferences. A convenience sample of 134 male-tofemale(MTF) and 94 female-to-male (FTM) individualsfrom Argentina rated Buss´s list of 18 mate attributes.Compared to FTM, MTF individuals placed significantlymore emphasis on attractiveness and socioeconomic status, whereas FTM, more than MTF individuals, valuedpartners with a dependable character. Although biologicalsex differences were present in both groups, providingsupport to the evolutionary theory, MTF individuals valuedthe same characteristics as both biological male andfemale individuals do.
