Resumen:
Yellow leaf disease, caused by Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV), is widespread around the world;however, very little information is available from Argentina. The aims of this study were to assess thepresence of SCYLV, characterize the virus and analyze its distribution in the main sugarcaneproduction area of Argentina. For this purpose, 148 sugarcane leaf samples with and withoutsymptoms were collected in 2011 and 2012 from the Tucumán province. One additional sample wascollected in Salta, considered a different geographical and agroecological producing region. Resultsshowed that SCYLV was present and widely distributed in commercial sugarcane varieties, both insymptomatic and asymptomatic leaves. A low but statistically significant positive correlation with virusdetection and disease symptoms was found. BRA-PER was the only genotype detected by RT-PCRand sequence analysis of the capsid protein gene.
