The steroids from the roots of Mandeuilla pentlandiuna were analysed. Six steroids and four 6-keto-stanols,novel as natural products, were isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The plant also produces cardenolide glycosides, for which 20-hydroxysterols are known to be biosynthetic precursors. The hydroxylatedderivatives have not been detected, but AZ0-derivatives, closely related to them, may be involved in that metabolic pathway.
