Resumen:
Aim: To isolate, purify and preserve strains of Streptococcus spp. and Lactobacillus spp. obtained from the oral cavity and ?in vitro? analyze their growth in the presence of lactic acid bacteria. Materials and methods: Saliva samples were collected from patients with active caries lesions. Mitis-salivarius agar medium (Difco,? Detroit, MI, USA) was used to recover Streptococcus spp. while Rogosa medium (Biokar Diagnostics, Beauvais, France) was used for the Lactobacillus spp. 7 strains of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis, 2 of Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. dextranicum, and 1 of Lactococcus lactis subsp. diacetylactis were used as bacteriocin producers. Its antagonist activity against cariogenic bacterial growth was tested ?in vitro? using the agar diffusion method. Results: The growth and the multiplication of oral Streptococcus spp. were affected due to the presence of metabolites produced by Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis. Conclusion: The growth of Streptococcus spp. strains is inhibited by the metabolites of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis.
