Resumen:
Alkaline sulfite treatment of wood generates complex effluents because of the presence of recalcitrant compounds. No information has been found regarding its treatment by heterogeneous Fenton-type oxidation The aim of this study was to find conditions that allow the reduction of the recalcitrant organic load of this industrial effluent while minimizing the leaching of the active phase. The stability of the catalytic system was analyzed. A Central Composite Design was subsequently applied, after that, an activated sludge system was applied in order to maximize the degradation of the organic matter. Severe experimental conditions assure that the oxidation happens in heterogeneous phase, minimizing copper leaching (less than 1 mg/L). The charge of residual organic matter (from the oxidative treatment) is successfully removed throughout microbiological degradation, reaching a global conversion of organic matter of above 90%.
