Resumen:
During the production process, the use under different modalities of agrochemicals expose the population and the environment to a certain risk. For this reason it is important to deepen the knowledge of the working conditions of rural workers, their cultural patterns, risk perception and the biological effects of pesticides on the health of the population and its impact on the environment. It has been found that 30 percent of pesticide applicators suffer cumulative exposure to pesticides and do not meet the basic protection requirements. This exposure to agrochemicals is one of the risk factors associated with the appearance of different types of cancers. In the province of Jujuy biosecurity measures are not taken into account during pesticide application. This has important implications for non-target organisms since concomitant with the widespread use of these compounds, accidents and associated diseases have significantly increased. In this regard, it is important to determine through surveys, biochemical studies and genotoxicity tests the actual exposure of workers to pesticides so the general population becomes aware and implement an adecquate use of these compounds. Results obtained concerning the evaluation of the genotoxic effect on exposed rural populations in the province of Jujuy will be presented and discussed.
