Resumen:
p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; }The horse is highlyprepared to maintain a high metabolism for long periods of time. Itshigh rate of sweating causes tremendous loss of electrolytes andwater in short time. Endurance races stand to be the competition withthe biggest metabolic demands for the sport horse. During races, somehorses show homeostasis alterations such as alterations in fluids,electrolytes, and acid-base balance. Under these conditions the needfor water and electrolytes supplementation during an endurance rideis evident. However, there are large discrepancies concerning the useof electrolytes. Endurance horses have special adaptations forthermorregulation, and their management requires a deep knowledge ofboth fundamental and applied nutrition and physiology. In thisarticle we discuss some key issues for the proper utilization ofelectrolytes in endurance horses such as: research, hindgutreservoir, exercise induced metabolic alkalosis, gastric irritation,and absorption of hyperosmotic solutions. Finally, practicalrecommendations for electrolyte supplementation during training andat competition are given.p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; direction: ltr; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); line-height: 120%; }p.western { font-family: "Liberation Serif","Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12pt; }p.cjk { font-family: "Droid Sans Fallback"; font-size: 12pt; }p.ctl { font-family: "FreeSans"; font-size: 12pt; }a:link { }
