The resistance of a set of Argentine wheatcultivars, differentials, and foreign lines with knowngenes of resistance to Zymoseptoria tritici was assessedat the seedling stage against a set of molecularly characterizedArgentine fungal isolates under three experimentalconditions. The experimental design was a split-splitplotwith two replications. The environment conditionswere the main plots, the fungal isolates were the subplotsand the wheat lines with known resistance genes or usedas differential lines or the Argentine commercial cultivarswere the sub-subplots. Sixteen fungal isolates were inoculatedon 23 wheat accessions including 12 foreign lineswith known resistance genes, two differential lines, andnine Argentine cultivars that were selected on the basis of their moderate resistance to natural infection, to identifyisolate-specific and partial resistances. The genotypes TE9111 and Oasis among the foreign lines along with theArgentine cultivars Pro INTA Puntal, Klein Volcán andBuck 75 Aniversario expressed the highest number ofspecific-resistance interactions. Flame, Tadinia andKavkaz among the foreign lines showed partial resistancesto a higher number of fungal isolates; a comparableresistance pattern was also obtained in the Argentinecultivars Klein Sagitario, Klein Dragón, Don Ernesto andBuck Arriero. Our study demonstrated that the presenceof resistance genes in several foreign lines againstSeptoria tritici blotch is effective against some of theArgentine fungal isolates. In addition, the Argentineanwheat cultivars that showed isolate-specific and nonspecificresistances probably carry novel resistance genesagainst the pathogen.
