Resumen:
In 1956 Denham Harman proposed the oxidative stress theory of aging. In this context and considering that the main cell oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is released from mitochondria by disruption of electron transfer and by nitric oxide (NO), we explore redox behavior of rat liver and brain organelles during aging. We confirmed that each age involves a specific mtNOS content in the studied tissues resulting from a progressive increase in nNOS gene transcription and protein translocation and activity (in pmoles/min.mg, liver 3 mo=23±2; 18 mo=41± 1; 24 mo=45±2; brain 3 mo=18±2; 18 mo=28±0.5; 24 mo=36±2, female/male rats in both organs; p
