Resumen:
The official history of discovery of Potosi deposit was used to justify the introduction of forced labor (the mita), which has cost the lives of millions of Indians. Today, this history must be rethought, crossing archives and archaeological data. The written direct sources from the early years of colonization have been used and can trace the political relations binding both the 2 invaders in the region (the Inca and Spanish) and local people. Since 1990, surveys have led to the realization of a location map of metallurgical sites. Some old mines have been located on the Cerro Rico. The silver technological process is now well understood through a study of a couple of sites in Potosi department. It reflects much more than Indian savoir-faire. It puts in light local power struggles for control of production of silver.
