We investigate the possibility of setting model independent limits for a non-standard anomalous magnetic moment $a^{\mbox{\tiny NP}}_{\tau}$ of the tau lepton, in future $\gamma \,\gamma$ colliders based on Compton backscattering. For a hypothetical collider we find that, at various levels of confidence, the limits for $a^{\mbox{\tiny NP}}_{\tau}$ could be improved, compared to previous studies based on LEP{\normalsize 1}, LEP{\normalsize 2} and SLD data. We show the results for a realistic range of the center of mass energy of the $e^+ e^-$ collider. As a more direct application, we also present the results of the simulation for the photon collider at the TESLA project.
