Resumen:
Introduction. Traffic accidents generate multiple costs to society, including those associated with lost productivity. However, there is no consensus about the most appropriate methodology for it estimation. Objective. Review methods for estimating indirect costs applied in studies concerning to costs of traffic accidents. Methods. A thematic review of the literature was made between 1995 and 2012 in PubMed with the terms: cost of illness, indirect cost, road traffic injuries, productivity loss. Results. For the valoration of costs, prevails the human capital method, given by the wage-income lost during the time of treatment and recovery of patients and caregivers. In the case of premature death or total disability, discount rate is applied to obtain the present value of lost future earnings. The computed years arise by subtracting to life expectancy at birth; the average age of those affected who are not incorporated into the economically active life. Conclusions. The interest in minimizing the problem is reflected in the evolution of the implemented methodologies. It is expected that this review constitutes a more contribution to estimate the real indirect costs of traffic accidents. Keywords: road traffic injuries, indirect cost, productivity loss, cost of illness.
