Resumen:
Objective. The paper aims to characterize the absenteeism in Nursing Sector of a Private Hospital in Bahía Blanca (Argentina). Methods. The methodology is descriptive, with information from January to June of 2008 inclusive. It is an observational and retrospective analysis, without any intervention. The target population is the entire nursing staff of the hospital. Results. The nursing sector has the highest percentage of absences, which arise mainly from diseases or accidents. The age with major absenteeism is 41 years, with an average antiquity from 20 to 25 years. The services with more absences correspond to the inpatient services (Maternity, Clinical and Surgical). Conclusion. The results allow the design of institutional policies focusing in causes, services, age and antiquity, which have highest absenteeism. This work raises the need to study new lines of research in relevant variables such as the number of beds, employment contracts and job satisfaction.
