Resumen:
This article proposes to delve into street markets understood as places of exchange in the cities of Buenos Aires and Vienna. The aim of this paper is not only to grasp their particularities and characteristics, but also to discuss differences and similarities with regards to their socio-economic and socio-cultural meaning. Street Markets are understood as key areas of social interaction for research, as everyday practices and (social) interactions can be observed, as well as context specific structural transformations and economic relations in Buenos Aires and Vienna may be mirrored. Not only in this sense, but also in relation to the research projects’ aim to discuss political implications of urban cultures, street markets are a fruitful field of study. Proposing this analysis of cases in these two cities, that are so dissimilar, is based on an analytical approach that allows for a more in-depth understanding of t these public spaces, beyond the differences.
