Resumen:
At present, the new energy storage systems (ESS) are a feasible alternative to store exceeding energy for substituting the generation reserve and consequently improving the primary frequency control (PFC) in case of disturbances. In this way, power electronics devices based on Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Systems (FACTS) using power converters combined with innovative energy storage systems allow to enhance the operation security of the power system. This article discusses the detailed modeling of the a Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) based on a multi-pulse voltage source inverter, coupled with a Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) coil through a two-quadrant multi-phase DC-DC chopper for applications in the primary frequency control. Furthermore, a three-level control scheme is presented for the integrated STATCOM/SMES system and the dynamic performance of the device is analyzed by using a test system with a three-phase fault and a tie-line tripping.
