A short description of Argentina's availability of mining resources is presented. Technological conditions, as well as economic, environmental and social issues related with the sustainable development in the mining industry are analized. Research and innovation needs in the sector are identified. Different options for funding research activities are explored, as well as international cooperation opportunities.
