Resumen:
At the end of 2007, the Argentinean government announced a major investment in research buildings. To apply for these funds, national universities and research centres have chosen different ways to develop their projects. Mendoza’s Regional School of the National Technological University launched a National Competition of Architectural projects for a new Research and Post-Graduate Studies building. The competition brief asked for an energy efficient design where energy conservation, passive heating and cooling and daylighting were the main requested strategies. In the proposed scheme, awarded the 3rd mention, a reduction of the 80% in the non-renewable energy consumption is achieved in comparison with a reference traditional building. Temperatures in working spaces in winter vary from 18ºC to 21ºC during the hours the building is in use. In summer, temperatures are in a 20ºC to 27ºC range. These are adequate to achieve comfort from an adaptive perspective compared to regular local conditions. As for daylight, the range varies from 300 to 500 lux on the working plane. Special attention was given to avoid high contrast and dazzle.
