Resumen:
The herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is used on a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic broadleafweeds. 2, 4-D has been shown to produce a wide range of adverse effects on animal and humanhealth. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of pre- and postnatal exposuretoof 2,4-D on rat ventral prostate. Pregnant rats were daily exposed daily to oral doses of 70mg/kg/day of 2,4-D from 16 days of gestation up to 23 days after delivery. Then, the treatedgroups (n=8) were fed with athe 2,4-D added diet until pups were sacrificed by decapitation onatpostnatal day (PND) 45, 60, or 90 (n=8). Morphometric studies were performed and measuredandrogen receptor (AR) protein levels in the ventral prostate (VP) were determined. AR, insulinlikegrowth factor-I (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor-I receptor (IGF-1R) mRNAexpression in the VP along withand testosterone (T), dihydroxytestosterone (DHT), growthhormone (GH) and IGF-1 serum levels were also determined to ascertain whether theseparameters were differentially affected. Rresults of this study showed shows that 2,4-D exposureduring gestation and until adulthood in male rats altered alters the development of the prostategland in male rats, delayingslowing it at early ages whileand increasing its size in adults, indicatethat 2,4-D could behave as an endocrine disruptors (ED).
