Resumen:
The thick-skinned Malargüe fold and thrust belt conforms Argentina’s Andes in southern Mendoza province. Its complex structure is the result of the combination of Andean compression and inherited characteristics. A sector of this fold and thrust belt is described, evaluating the controls on Andean deformation. These controls include the presence of basement pre-existing structures and the rheology of the deformed units, specially the presence of a thick gypsum horizon acting as a detachment and locally producing diapirism.
