Resumen:
The La Colonia Formation crops out in the southeastern border of Somún Curá Plateau, in thenorth part of Chubut province. Depositional environments correspond to fluvial, marine-marginaland shallow marine, and the estimaded age for this unit is Campanian-Paleocene. Numerouspaleontological field works since de ?80s have recovered a diverse fauna of continental and marinevertebrates from the middle section of the La Colonia Formation assigned, through stratigraphicrelationships, to the Campanian-Maastrichtian. Among the continental vertebrates were recoveredfresh water fishes (dipnoans, lepisosteids, siluriformes, and percomorphs), anurans(callyptocephalellids, neobatracians indet. y anurans indet.), lepidosaurs (squamates indet.,madtsoiids, and rhynchocephalians), ornithischian dinosaurs (ankylosaurids and hadrosaurids),sauropod dinosaurs (titanosaurs indet. and saltasaurids), theropod dinosaurs (abelisaurids),enantiornithine birds, chelid and meiolaniform turtles, holotherian mammals (mesungulatids, reigitherids) and allotherian mammals (ferugliotherids). The continental tetrapod fauna from theLa Colonia Formation shares numerous taxa with the Allenian tetrapod assemblage present in theAllen, Los Alamitos, Loncoche, and Angostura Colorada Formations. Nevertheless, it is remarkablethe absence, until now, of pipoid anurans and ornithurine birds in the La Colonia Formation.
