Resumen:
Despite being an iconic species and thenational bird of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, and Ecuador, the Andean condor (Vulturgryphus) is moving fast toward extinction. Its world population, which probablydoes not exceed 6700 individuals,is worryingly declining throughout itsrange, particularly due to massive poisoningevents to which the species isespecially prone because of its highly gregariousbehavior at carcasses. To address the roots of the complexthreats faced by Andean condors, theconservation response must leverageinternational and multi-sectoral collaboration. Those working toward protectingthe species must base all actions onscientific evidence and assess each steptaken to evaluate its effectiveness. Onlywith coordinated efforts at local, national, and international levels can we halt theAndean condor´s decline.
