Resumen:
After a series ofstrongly influencing works made during the last decade of the 20th century, nitric oxide (NO) is now firmly considered a plant signal molecule with broad participation in the processes of plants. NO acts as a signal in plant-microbe interactions, plant responses to abiotic stresses, stomatal regulation and gas exchange between plants and environment, and it is an essential cue in a range of plant growth and developmental processes. This chapter will highlight key aspects of the diversified biosynthetic pathways of NO, its metabolism and theevolution of the pathways considering uni- and pluricellular photosynthetic organisms. The biological function of NO in plants will be mainly focused inthe pivotal role played by NO in hormonal signaling. The molecular mechanisms underpinning the NO actions in plant cells will also be addressed. Theknowledge of NO biology in photosynthetic organisms showed a unique growth rateduring the last years. It is tempting now to think that, for an affirmativefeedback, innovative ideas and strategies coming from the acquired knowledge inthe plant field might positively influence research in animal systems.
