In this paper we pretend to put in discussion the relationship between large-scale mining  with the strengthening and development of regional economies. Catamarca with a residual positioning in the economic structure of the country, has been pioneering in mining large-scale production with the start-up in 1997 of  Mining  Alumbrera Ltda and El Altiplano- FMC. From a case study conducted in Antofagasta de la Sierra, will try to find the inconsistencies of this development model for the territories where resources are located, through the Quality of Life Index (QLI).
