Studying media reception: the use of qualitative techniques on children aged 8-9

From a qualitative research developed in the City of Cordoba, Argentina, I analyze how girls and boys aged 8 ? 9 that belong to different objective conditions of existence, build discourse around gender representations. The study was developed in the context of reception of an animated movie, Disney?s Beauty and the Beast. I show how the application of the focus group in media reception allowed me to observe children representations on gender norms, relations between genders and social values that are linked to the interviewees? objective conditions of existence. I worked with two groups of children; one of them belonging to the working class and the other, to middle class.
