Resumen:
Injuries in an Argentinean Emergency Room: their association with chronic and acute alcohol use. Objective: To explore the association of usual and acute alcohol consumption with the presence of injury and injury type in patients admitted to an Emergency Room (ER). Materials and Methods: Data were collected from a probabilistic sample of patients admitted to an ER from a large public hospital in Mar del Plata, Argentina. Patients (n=978) were breathalyzed (Alcosensor III, Intoxicometers Inc.) as soon as possible after their arrival to the ER and administered a questionnaire in personal interviews. A factorial analysis of multiples correspondences and mixed classification analysis were performed. Variables taken as active were usual quantity of drinking, reason for admission (injury, other cause), type of injury, intentionality of injury (violent, non violent), age group and gender; while breathalyzer reading and response to an Alcohol Use Disorders screening test (RAPS) were taken as illustrative. Results: From the factorial map and dendogram a four class typology of patients was obtained. Two classes group those patients injured, young, with indicators of Alcohol Use Disorders. The first of these two classes also involves those violently injured and those usually drinking moderate and high quantities per occasion. This group has the highest breathalyzer readings. The second class comprises males un-intentional injured, with the main type of injuries being falls, motor-vehicle crashes and those pedestrians injured. The two remaining classes involve non-injured patients. One of these classes comprises abstainers and older patients, the other young and middle aged women. Conclusion: Given the lack of similar studies in the region, the description presented is a valuable contribution to understanding the alcohol-injury relation in this context and may guide the design of prevention strategies.
