Resumen:
AbstractEvidence indicates Brief Interventions (BI) are effective to reduce alcohol consumption and related problems among adolescents and emerging adults. Most articles come from high-income countries, with different cultural backgrounds and drinking practices from those of Latin-American countries, while the extent of research evidence among the later remains unknown. Objective: In this scoping review we describe Latin-American production regarding BI among adolescence and youth. Methods: Data search was conducted for each Latin-American country in Medline, Lilacs, and Cochrane databases, without temporal or language restrictions. Search in databases was complemented by hand-searches. After eliminating repeated and unrelated articles, 22 articles were included and analyzed by two judges separately. Results: Articles were published between 2004-2020, and they were from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina. Most articles were empirical studies and near half of them, experimental with adequate randomization. Most studies were carried out in educational contexts, such as universities and schools. The AUDIT was the most used screening tool, although there was a wide variety of measures. Conclusion: The main limitations of these articles were small sample sizes, as well as the lack of unified outcome criteria. Areas in need of more research are the effectiveness and mechanisms underlying efficacy. Implication: Since 2004 research on BI among adolescents and young persons has kept stably, although it remains scarce. Efforts to further the knowledge about BI in Latin-American countries should be prioritized, to advance public health.
