Este artículo analiza los cambios semánticos que experimentó la relación entre los conceptos civilización y cristianismo en Argentina, Brasil y Uruguay durante el siglo XIX. Analiza los debates en torno a los sentidos a dar a la asociación de ambos conceptos y a otros que solían aparecer vinculados a ellos en el discurso de la época, como progreso, ilustración, barbarie, etc. Busca aportar complejidad al conocimiento de corrientes de pensamiento religioso, político y social en pugna en el siglo XIX, como el liberalismo, el galicanismo y el ultramontanismo. El trabajo fue realizado en el marco del proyecto internacional Iberconceptos y del grupo "Religión y Política".This article analyzes the semantic changes experienced during the 19th century by therelationship between the concepts of civilization and Christianity in Brazil and the Río de la Plata (thecurrent Argentina and Uruguay). This includes the analysis of the debates around the meanings of thoseconcepts, as well as others that were considered related by the discourse of the time: progress,illustration, barbarism, etc. This study brings complexity to the understanding of currents of politicaland social thought in Latin America such as liberalism, Gallicanism and ultramontanism. This work isthe product of the international project Iberconceptos: Religión y Política.
