Resumen:
Preliminary results are presented from numerical modelling of flow, sediment transport and morphological change in the multi-thread Rio Paraná, Argentina. A hierarchical modelling strategy has been adopted, involving approaches based on the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, two-dimensional shallow water equations, and cellular automaton models with minimal representation of the governing physics. Models are applied to examine relationships between process and form in large sand-bed rivers, and to assess the scope for investigating river behaviour using approaches that seek to minimise model complexity.
