Resumen:
The development 1 of data approximation methods2 from coarse spatial resolution images is gaining increasing3 interest in the research community. This letter aims to extend and4 validate a developed methodology for estimating border length of5 diverse marine coastlines from coarse spatial resolution images6 like Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) by7 using fractal attributes and its error behavior. The accuracy8 of MODIS-based estimates and the reliability of the method9 to predict coastline length measurements by extrapolation was10 evaluated using Landsat 8 over different coastline types. It is11 shown that with our method, 250-m MODIS images are adequate12 for estimating coastline lengths with a precision equivalent to13 standard linear measurements performed on 30-m resolution14 imagery, with average errors between 3% and 18% for straight15 and complex coasts, respectively. These results indicate that an16 underestimation error, occurring in rugged and complex coasts,17 is more frequent and significant than overestimation occurring18 in smooth and straight coasts.
