Resumen:
In this paper a quantitative description of thehydrographic regime in the inner shelf offshore BahiaBlanca and Colorado River estuaries based ontemperature, salinity, suspended matter and currentvelocity data is described. Both estuaries contribute indifferent ways to the physical characteristics of theenvironment. The Colorado River estuary is the majorsource of freshwater into the EI Rincon area, whereasthe Bahia Blanca estuary is a source ofrelatively warmand salty water. Accordingly, the influence of bothestuaries in the distribution of the water properties isobserved. It is the first time the influence of the discharge ofthe Colorado River into the inner shelf was quantified. The processes involved at the Bahia Blanca Estuary(1) Instituto Argentino de Oceanograffa • CONICETCasilla Corrao 804 • 8000 Bahia Blanca· ArgentinaE-mail: cuadrado@criba.edu.ar· Fax: (54) 91-4861519(2) Universidad Nacional del Sur· Departamento de GeologiaPeru 670 • 8000 Bahia Blanca· Argentina(3) Universidad Nacional del Sur· Departamento de Geografia12 de Octubre y San Juan· 8000 Bahia Blanca· Argentinaare different from the typical estuary pattern.Exchange processes between estuaries andembayments with offshore waters are seldom analyzedin detail, especially in relation to the circulation of theinner shelves. With the information obtained by twocurrentmeters two regimes are identified, oneassociated with the estuarine waters and one with thecoastal waters.
