For design and checking purposes, the knowledge of the right value of pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at the tube wall are fundamental topics to deal with.  In this work, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tool is used on the basis of the periodic boundary condition approach in the frame of Fluent 6.3.26 code to evaluate the pressure drop and heat transfer rates at the tube wall. Extreme operating conditions were analyzed in this study: low aspect ratios and high bed temperatures. CFD calculations are compared with a set of very well established correlations for pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient at the wall of fixed beds. In this sense, it is possible to conclude that Montillet et al´s expression is in very good agreement with CFD pressure drop estimation and that its use can be emphatically recommended. On the contrary, concerning the heat transfer coefficient, it depends strongly on the bed structure (porosity and particle array), and a general correlation for the evaluation of this coefficient is proposed here on the basis of CFD calculations. This correlation is in good agreement with some data existing in the literature.
