Arsenic (As) is chosen in the treatment of certain human neoplasm varieties (leukaemia, breast cancer, etc.) due to its strong oxidative cytotoxicity. However, it can also affect normal cells, thus dietary antioxidants (flavonoids) could be jointly used to counteract these undesirable collateral effects. Flavonoids are micronutrients naturally-occurring in many vegetables. One proposed anticancer mechanism induced by As might be nitrosative stress (NS). In order to go further into As antineoplastic potential, several cellular parameters linked to cancer development were assessed in the human cancer lines MCF-7 and ZR-75-1 treated with redox-modulating flavonoids, such as quercetin (Q) and silymarin (S), alone or added with As.
