Resumen:
--Micropaleontology is a very well established discipline in Europe, America, Africa, and Asia, and it is a valuable tool in basic and applied geology and paleobiology. It also complements interdisciplinary studies on climate change and pollution andforensic studies apart from the traditional uses in biostratigraphy, paleoenvironments, and paleoecology. The first South American and Antarctic Micropaleontology Symposium tookplace in Corrientes, Argentina, in 2002, during the VII Congreso Argentino dePaleontología y Bioestratigrafía. Since then, both meetings have been associated. The present book, Advances in South American Micropaleontology: SelectedPapers of the 11th Argentine Paleontological Congress, intends to provide anupdate on the research carried out by South American micropaleontologist in thefields of microfossils, such as foraminifera, ostracods, calcareous nannofossils, anddiatoms, present in the geological record.Their research in these fields was presented and discussed in the IV Simposio deMicropaleontología de America del Sur y Antártida in the forum of the XICongreso de la Asociación Paleontológica Argentina (CAPA 2016) which tookplace in General Roca, Río Negro, Argentina, from October 17 to 21, 2016.The symposium was well attended by Brazilian, Colombian, Ecuadorian, andArgentinean scientists. There were 23 presentations and posters. The editors acknowledge and thank Dr. J. Rabassa for the invitation to publishsome of the research presented at the IV Simposio of Micropaleontología deAmerica del Sur y Antártida in a Springer Special Volume in the Springer EarthSystem Science book series and for his support. Thanks are also expressed to thoseresearchers from several countries that helped us as reviewers, and their opinion andcontributions improved the original manuscripts. The book consists of nine chapters. The chapters are written by single authors orinterdisciplinary group of authors, highlighting the team approach to research. The chapters follow a stratigraphic order, and we summarize them below
