Resumen:
Globalchange affects glacier recession, which in turn affects glacial clay load tolakes. This brings changes in lake transparency, and modifies the Light:Nutrientratio of the lakes and consequently the C:P ratio, hence the food quality forherbivores. We carried out a field and laboratory study in Lake Mascardi(Patagonia, Argentina) that receives waters from glaciers of Tronador Mountainand has a long transparency gradient. In this gradient we analyzed the changein sestonic C:P ratio and the consequences of this food quality in the responseof Daphnia commutata to the increase in UVR, and so theoxidative stress along the same gradient. We analyzed how changes in foodquality and UVR drove the antioxidant response in Daphnia. In addition we explored how the glacial clay itself affected the antioxidantenzymatic activity and respiration rates. We found that along the gradient, thefood quality decreases but the underwater UVR increases. In addition, theglacial clay affected respiration, and some antioxidant enzyme activities. Theinteraction of these factors reduces the overall ecological fitness of a high Pdemanding species.
