Resumen:
Nothofagus nitida is an evergreen tree species considered endemicto the humid forests of Southern Chile. In this study, we inform the finding ofN. nitida individuals on the easternslopes of the Andes in Argentina, expanding its potential geographic distributionrange, restricted until now to humid areas west of the Andean range, in Chile. Newlocalities correspond to the Brazo Sur of Menéndez Lake on river banks of Río Alerceand Río del Paso Viejo, at Los Alerces National Park, Chubut Province,Argentina. Samples of fresh leaves were collected from 5 individuals that wereputatively considered as putative N.nitida, based on leaf and bark morphology. We performed automatedsequencing of the ITS nuclear DNA region, that was previously used to identifydifferent species of subgenus Nothofagus.Four of the obtained DNA sequences corresponded to N. nitida. In addition, we realized a species distribution modelthat showed other potential areas of occurrence in Argentina. This findingmerits the exploring efforts in other localities at the East of the AndeanRange, using as guidance the potential distribution maps in order to determineits current distribution and genetic markers to confirm its presence.
