Resumen:
This study aims toestimate the optimal properties of friction pendulum devices to seismically isolateelastic structural systems under earthquake excitations having differentcharacteristics in terms of frequency content. A two-degree-of-freedom model isconsidered to describe the isolated system behavior with a velocity-dependentmodel for the isolators. Specifically, a non-dimensional formulation of thegoverning equations of motion is presented in order to relate thecharacteristic parameters describing the isolator and structure properties tothe response parameters of interest for the performance assessment. Severalseismic artificial excitations, having frequency contents properly defined todescribe respectively stiff, medium and soft soil conditions, are assumed. Finally, theoptimum values of the friction coefficient that minimize the superstructuredisplacements relative to the base mass as a function of thestructural system properties, of the seismic input intensity and of the soil conditionare computed.
