Resumen:
The paper deals with the mechanical behaviour of an unsaturated air-fall volcanic (pyroclastic)soil, originated by the explosive eruptions of the Vesuvius volcano in southern Italy. Some experimental laboratorytests are described with special reference to the Water Retention Curve (WRC) and the Critical StateLine (CSL); and, a series of wetting-collapse suction-controlled oedometric tests are illustrated. Then, a GeneralizedPlasticity constitutive model is calibrated referring both the WRC and CSL, and is used to simulatethe experimental results of the wetting-collapse tests. The numerical results match the experimental evidencesreasonably well, because the constitutive model properly simulates the suction-related bonding effect amongthe solid grains.
