Increasing public awareness world wide in regard to the contributions made by brain research and its application to human diseases is its primary goal. IBRO, via its Public Education Committee, supports and promotes initiatives that help to spread knowledge about the brain and neuroscience research and its impact on diseases, particularly in emerging and disadvantaged communities where information is generally not available.  Awards are made for the orqanization of educational events that increase public awareness of the brain.  Most of these are held during Brain Awareness Week (now a major worldwide activity) and involve many thousands of school and University students and members of the general public in lectures, demonstrations and competitions. In addition, IBRO has translated the booklet Neuroscience - The Science of the Brain into 17 widely spoken languages and is currently engaged in a further 5 translations.  The Public Education Committee is also responsible for encouraging the organization of local and national Brain Bees, in preparation for sending a national candidate to participate in the International Brain Bee run by Dr Norbert Myslinski at the University of Maryland.
