Resumen:
Metasedimentary and metaigenous rocks crop out to the west of El Peñon in the Argentinean Puna. The rocks are strongly deformed and penetrated by garnet-bearing pegmatites. A wide variety of lithofacies do occur in a relatively short profile of c. 1 km. This is not comparable with the rather monotonous facies of the low-grade metamorphic rocks of the Puncoviscana Formation, supposed to be the basement of the region. Of further interest is the significant occurrence of calcite in the metasedimentary rocks, besides in quartzites, interpreted as a secondary mineral. However, the source for these alteration fluids needs to be established.
