Resumen:
Quantum Hall Effects, Topological insulators and a new type of order: Opportunities in physics, chemistry and materials scienceLuis E. F. Foa TorresCONICET and FaMAF, Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Córdoba, ArgentinaMore than 30 years ago, the discovery of the exact quantization of the Hall conductance under extreme conditions of low temperatures and high magnetic fields opened the doors for the study of a new type of order [1]. Twenty seven years later, similar physics was spotted without a magnetic field in a discovery that led to the so called Topological Insulators [2]. In this talk I will give a brief and general overview on these materials. Opportunities in fields beyond physics (e.g. Chemistry, Materials Science) will be highlighted. I will also comment on new directions aiming at achieving similar properties in any material [3-4].[1] von Klitzing, Dorda, and Pepper, Phys. Rev.
