For phosphorus compounds, the decay of a 3p electron (a valence electron) to a 1s vacancyprovide information not only about the emitting atom, but also about its chemicalenvironment. The clusters PO43- (phosphates) and P2O74- (pyrophosphates) in different chemical environments have been studied by means of high resolution Kb spectroscopy usingsynchrotron radiation. Noticeable changes in the measured spectra depending on the chemicalstate were observed. The three principal lines (Kb1,3, Kbx and Kb') of the P-Kb spectrum wereinvestigated. The relative energies of the satellites lines and the transition probability of Kb'line was obtained. The spectral features are influenced by the hydrogen and the ligand. The Kb' line allows not only the ligand atom to be identified but also the hydrogen number ofthe compound to be determined. We also observed changes in the area and in the relativeenergy of the Kb ' line in compounds with different alkaline cations (K+ and Na+). The relativeenergy of the Kbx line shows some dependence with the molecular symmetry of thecompounds.
