Synthesis of ZrO2-Sc2O3 Nanopowders by Gel-Combustion Routes

ZrO2-6 mol% Sc2O3 nanopowders were synthesized by gelcombustion routes using different amino acids as fuel (glycine, alanine and lysine). They exhibited average crystallite sizes in therange of 8-16 nm and BET specific surface areas of 8-12 m2/g. Dense ceramics with excellent electrical properties were prepared by uniaxial pressing and sintering in air at relatively low temperatures (1350°C). Specimens prepared from different nanopowders evaluated in this work exhibited similar ionic conductivities, comparable to those reported in the literature for solid electrolytes with similar composition.
