Resumen:
The thyroid hormones (TH) are able to regulate different cellular functions in vertebrates. Many of these effects are mediated by gene expression regulation through T3-nuclear receptors binding. Nevertheless, the TH are able to induce non-genomic effects on the plasmatic membrane, citoesqueletum, intracellular cytoplasm and organelles. Moreover, fluorescence spectroscopy studies carried out in our laboratory allowed to describe differential effects of the TH on the membrane biophysics properties (1, 2). The FTIR technique is known to be a versatile and powerful tool to investigate changes that occur at different levels of the lipid bilayer, i.e, hydrophobic, interfacial and polar regions (3). In order to characterize the hormone-membrane interaction we use FTIR spectroscopy with the TH-liposome system in different lipid compositions. Our results reveal that L-T2, L-T3 y L-T4 are not able to affect neither interfacial nor the polar region of zwiterionic bilayers in the pH range from 5 to 9, in which the hormones exhibit different ionization degree of their phenolic-OH group. However, they can affect the packing of the hydrophobic core region in different way. The influence of  membrane composition in the interaction was also studied. The results presented herein could be relevant in order to gain basic knowledge on the non-genomic mechanisms of hormonal action. References 1.            Chehin R., Rintoul M. R., Morero R.
