The members of the crustacean
family Galatheidae are a group of small, lobster-like crabs. Particularly, Munida
subrugosa is very abundant off the Patagonian coasts. In this study, our
objective was to integrate the biological information on galatheids, focusing
on Munida subrugosa of the Beagle Channel. We considered three aspects
of their biology: first, galatheids occur at high abundances and biomasses.
Second, they have two different and complementary feeding habits: as a predator
and/or as a deposit feeder. Finally, all of them are preys of top predators.
The importance of the galatheids in benthic ecosystems is here discussed in
terms of the stability of the communities, energetic transfer, and the impact
of commercial fishing on their populations.
