SUMMARY DEPENDENT AND INDEPENDENT RELAXATION IN SAPHENOUS VEINS OF CORONARY BY-PASS Objective   In saphenous vein (SV), evaluating the capacity for: 1) preserving the function of dependent nitric oxide (NO) within the coronary bed, 2) adapting to sharp pressure changes, 3) showing scarce spasmodic response; through 1) measuring stretching response, 2) measuring of endothelium-dependent relaxation through acetylcholine (ACH) and endothelium-independent through nitroprusside (NPS), 3) estimation of maximum muscular contraction through high potasio (K), 4) valuation of arterial hypertension (AHT) and diabetes (DBT), or its (their) association to the aforementioned parameters. Materials y methods    31 patients for coronary surgery, without AHT nor DBT (G1), AHT without DBT (G2), DBT without AHT (G3), AHT with DBT (G4), 1-4 4 mm rings of SV of each one were placed into organ-isolated chamber for objective (OBJ) 1: previous charge of 3 g, Measurements at intervals of 15 min. and tension adjustment, OBJ 2, effect ACH 10-6 M in vase previously contracted by noradrenalina, effect NPS 10-5 on non stimulated vase after being sensitized by angiotensin II, OBJ 3, 100 mM of KCI unpolarizing solution. Results    Spontaneous relaxation was: G2 compared to G3 (p<0.02) and to G3 (p<0.04). NPS relaxed all the groups, the relaxation by NPS for non stimulated vases for G1, G3 and G4 were similar to G2 (NS). Stimulation with ACH did not relaxe vases. KCI contracted in all groups. Conclusions    The fact of having found vase dilation through NOS, suggests that flat muscle cells are present and that they are functional within the SV, possibly containing normal values of Guanylate cyclase with a good production of GMPc.    Good contractile capacity through KCL indicates that muscle cells are not non fibrotic.    (Rev Arg Cir Cardiovasc 2004; 2:92-96) Key words Saphenous - By pass - Coronary
