Resumen:
Objective: To evaluate whether chronic antihypertensive treatment may inhibit left ventricle hypertrophy (LVH) development and reverse the decline in beta-adrenergic response associated with changes in myocardial oxidative metabolism.Design and method: Male spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR, 2 month old) were assigned to groups (n group=18) according to (mg/kg, O.D.): losartan 30 (L), hydralazine 11 (H), rosuvastatin 10 (R), carvedilol 20 (C), water (SHRw treatment control). Hypertension controls were 18 normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). Systolic blood pressure (SBP) (awake rats plethysmography) and body weight (BW) were periodically recorded. Eutanasia was practiced 16 months after the study beginning. Fifty percent of the hearts were mounted in Langendhorff preparation. Contractility was measured pre and post beta adrenergic isoproterenol stimulation (Iso: 10-9M, 10-7M, 10-5 M). Left ventricle weight (LVW) was measured in the remaining hearts and expressed as LVH/BW. Immunohistochemical expression of thioredoxins (Trx-1, Prx-2, Grx-3), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and catalase-3 was measured. Results: No differences in BW were observed across groups. Systolic SBP (mm Hg): 154±3 (L), 137±1 (H), 190±3 (R) **, 206±3 (SHRw)*, 183±1 (C) **, 141±1 (WKY) (*p
