Resumen:
BACKGROUND. Apolipoprotein E deficiency impairs lipid metabolism andaccelerates atherosclerosis development in a geneticallyaltered mouse model.1 Apo E deficiency is related to thehepatic expression of proinflammatory mediators2 and toaccelerated aging in heart, kidneys and liver.3 In relationwith hepatic damage, increased susceptibility to developsevere liver injury4 and a 5-lypoxigenase mediated inflammatorymechanism have been reported.5 Yet, despite thewide utilization of apo E-deficient (knock-out, null or -/-)mice for multiple purposes, the relationship betweenhepatic injury and atherosclerotic development is stillunclear.AIMS. This work was conducted in order to explore a possibletemporal association between hepatic damage andatherosclerotic evolution in Apo E-deficient mice and tocharacterize the lesions as well.
