ABSTRACTRiparian zones are green infrastructures with the capability to mitigate the effects of climate changes, such as floods and droughts. Soil and vegetation can be used to improve infiltration, evapotranspiration, recycling of the first rainwater, and to reduce atmospheric pollution. In Argentina, 90 % of wastes produced by industrial activities go directly to water bodies without treatments, also including non-point contamination produced by cattle farming and agricultural practices. Thus, this paper aims to develop some relevant criteria and tools in the Lujan River Basin, situated near from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to evaluate the degree of conservation of riparian ecosystems, the reduction of these services, and to critically analyze the existing regulation about this particular type of ecosystem. This paper aims to provide a tool by analyzing the conceptual steps in order to assess the variety and magnitude of the ecosystem services provided by the riparian areas in the Lujan river.
