Resumen:
Cells, the basic units of all living organisms, are constantly interacting with their environment. Based on this interaction, cells perform different tasks which, in turn, affect the environment. There is thus a continuous flow of information that needs to be processed and acted upon. In this lecture I will describe some of the ways in which this information flow occurs and some of the end responses that this flow can elicit. I will start with a brief description of cell structure with special emphasis on those components that are involved in information processing. I will then describe some examples of cell signals in general. I will finally focus on Ca2+ signals, a type of signaling mechanism that is used in almost all cell types to produce a large variety of end responses discussing how these signals can be universal and specific at the same time.
